Possible Worlds II: Nonreductive Theories of Possible Worlds

نویسنده

چکیده

I briefly discussed a view (see (Lewis, 1986)) which attempts to use (SC) to provide a theory of possible worlds aimed at using (SC) to reduce modality. This review sets aside such reductive theories of possible worlds, and concentrates instead on four leading nonreductive theories. Though some of these theories have reductive variants, the versions that figure most prominently in contemporary discussions disavow any ambition to reduce modality to non-modal terms. I start by considering what theoretical purposes other than reduction possible worlds might serve (§1). I will then turn to the consideration of the four leading views (§§2-5).

First, the moral supervenience relationship is made explicit, for the ...

The Limits of Modality

It is commonly assumed that all propositions have modal profiles and therefore bear their truth-values either contingently or necessarily. In what follows, I argue against this commonly assumed view and in defense of amodalism, according to which certain true propositions are neither necessarily nor contingently true, but only true simpliciter. My defense of amodalism proceeds indirectly. I beg...

Two-dimensional Truth

The paper identifies two major strands of truth theories, ontological and epistemological ones and argues that both are of equal primacy and find their home within two-dimensional semantics. Contrary to received views, it argues further that epistemological truth theories operate on Lewisian possible worlds and ontological truth theories on Wittgensteinian possible worlds and that both are medi...

Worlds and Times

There are many parallels between the role of possible worlds in modal logic and that of times in tense logic. But the similarities only go so far, and it is important to note where the two come apart. This paper argues that even though worlds and times play similar roles in the model theories of modal and tense logic, there is no tense analogue of the possible-worlds analysis of modal operators...

Updating as Communication

On many traditional theories of belief, your belief state is represented by an assignment of credences to propositions, or sets of possible worlds. If you are rational, your credence distribution will be a probability measure. Traditional theories of belief fit with a standard Bayesian theory of rational belief change: on learning a proposition, you must update your belief state by conditionali...
